WHAT IS PHYSIOTHERAPY?
Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function after injury or illness. Physiotherapists use physical modalities and exercise to help return normal movement. Polly Roberts is Chartered and Registered with the Health Care Professions Council.
Physiotherapy takes a holistic approach to health and well being including the persons general lifestyle. The focus on treatment is the person's involvement in their care including education, awareness, empowerment and participation in their treatment.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The first session will last an hour, we will start with a comprehensive assessment of the current problem . This includes details of the problems and the behaviour of your symptoms. We will gain information on relevant medical conditions, injuries and medication. We will ask about your work, hobbies and your goals of treatment.
Next we will perform a physical examination to assess the problem. It is helpful to undress the injured part eg, shorts for a knee or ankle problem or wearing a vest for shoulder problems. This is so we can assess surrounding muscles and joints.
The results from the Physical tests, information from the initial history taking and lifestyle factors will help Polly provide a clinical impression or diagnosis. The Physiotherapy treatment options will be discussed to help you decide on a treatment plan to achieve your goal(s).
Once you have agreed a treatment plan the treatment will usually be started that session. Treatment includes exercises (strengthening, stretching, neural mobilisations, co-ordination exercises, balance, Pilates), manual therapy- mobilisations, manipulation or massage, taping or strapping, education and advice.
First appointments last 1 hour and follow up appointments last 30 -60 minutes depending on the treatment.
